Title: Synthesis, characterization, chemical and biological studies of some bisthiourea compounds.
Carbonoylthiourea derivatives have received much interest due to their biological properties as well as their reactivity to form complexes with metals. The presence of the nucleophilic sulfur atom enables the compound to be used as ionophore to detect metal ions in solution. The presence of two thiourea moieties in bis-thiourea derivatives could enhance the activity. Therefore several thiourea derivatives will be designed and synthesized. Their chemical, spectroscopic and complexation with some metals will be studied. Their biological activities will also be investigated. Preliminary study has indicated that they are less toxic to some bacteria may be due to their size. Further data are needed to get a better and clear picture before arriving to a conclusion.

Title: Synthesis and characterization of some dye compounds containing thiourea moiety.
Some organic dyes are useful for the development of electronic and optical devices. The fluorescence properties upon irradiation by UV or IR light of the dye can also be studied as potential candidate for photoimaging applications.
Source: Van Der Vorst et al. 2011
Some indole derivatives dyes with conjugated spacer have been synthesized and reported by Chinese researchers. Although the yield are quite low about 5-7 % the success to obtain such a compound will have a significant impact on the application study as the amount required is normally quite small. The synthesis of the salt type organic dye involves several steps and the starting materials are not commercially available and therefore need to be synthesized in the laboratory. One the ionic thiourea-indole type of dyes obtained in the project is N-(3-chloropropionyl)-N'-phenyl thiourea2-methylbenzothiazole squaric acid shown below.

Title: Synthesis and magnetic study of ferrocenium compounds containing diprotic acid anion pair.
A condition for the formation of tetraferrocenium bis[µ-oxalato bis(tetraiisothiocyanato)ferrate(III)] was obtained. Therefore, a series of analogous compounds with different metal cations and anion derived from different diprotic acids can be designed and synthesized. The oxalato types of metal complexes are known to display interesting magnetic properties.

Title: Synthesis of Tetraaza Macrocyclic and Its Interaction with Some Metal.
Macrocylic compounds containing electron donor atoms such oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur atoms are known to play a role as host for many metal cations. They can also form complexes with transition and lanthanide metals. The ability to bind with metal ions enables it to be used as ionophore for sensor as well as ion selective electrodes. In this project several 14-membered tatraaza mecrocylic compound of X where X=Br, NO3, PF6, Cl and ClO4 were synthesized and characterized. The four nitrogen atoms are symmetrically located at diagonally at opposite position. Two of the nitrogen atoms are protonated and the other two are azomethine moiety. Complexation of the macrocylic compounds with several transition metals are on progress.

Title: MG49 films containing macrocyclic salts for solid polymer electrolytes and ion selective electrodes.
This project will investigate the use of grafted natural rubber with polymethylmethacrylate (MG49) together with selected macrocyclic salts and metal ions as dopants to form filems. The physical properties and conductivity of the films will be studied. The application of the films as ion selective electrode will also be investigated.

Title: Catalytic reaction of Liquid Epoxide Natural Rubber (LENR) with carbon dioxide.
It is known that under certain conditions epoxide group can undergo ring opening by reaction with HBr to form bromohydrin. Polycarbonate is commercially prepared by epoxide with CO2 and polymerization.. In this study, the reaction of LENR and propylene epoxide (as model reaction) with CO2 will be investigated by using some catalysts prepared in our laboratory.

Title: Complexation of 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetrazacyclotetradeca-7,14-dienium (HMTAD) with lanthanide.
HMTAD consist of 4 nitrogen donor atoms located diagonally in the 14-membered macrocyclic ring. Two of the nitrogen atoms are protonated and the other two are azomethine group. The donor property and coordination capability with lanthanide metals will be investigated. Their spectroscopic properties will also be studied.

Title: Synthesis of some carbonoylthiourea derivatives and the anti-bacteria activity.
Carbonoylthiourea derivatives have wide application in anti-bacterial studies. Many researchers synthesize carbonoylthiourea to study the biological activities that have potential in pharmaceutical and medicine. Most of carbonoylthiourea form trans-cis configuration and a few with cis-trans configuration. In this project, carbonoylthiourea derivatives will be synthesized and studied for their anti-bacteria activity.

Title: Synthesis of iron oxide in microgel
Nano iron oxide particles are currently being synthesized because of their magnetic and catalytic properties. Several methods have been developed such as precipitation, metal vapor deposition, electrodeposition and thermal decomposition techniques.
In the present study, nano iron oxide particles is synthesized from iron (III) complex in microgel such as poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). Early results show that precipitation of iron (III) complex by sodium hydroxide is delayed by allowing a slow crystallization to take place. Under such condition nano iron oxide of the size 2-5nm could be obtained. Detailed study on nano iron oxide formation is being investigated.
